3Rivers Water-Based Sealer Reviews

Great sealer

Snow Hawk

When I was a furniture refinisher, I always used acrylic water base finishes because they were safe, had no fumes harmful to the environment, and one coat was as thick as 3 coats of nitrocellulose lacquer. I save lots of time on arrows because one dip gives me a lovely 4 mil thick coat. I use the white sealer full length on some sets of arrows when I really want the cresting and read more crown to pop against the background.

All I use

I have been using this product for well over 10 years, making hundreds of arrows. I use a dip tube with sealed top reservoir adding when low. To avoid air bubbles I only turn the sealed tube upside. down one or two times, very easily. Two coats are sufficient, and the arrow weight is very precise.

It's OK

I used a rag to apply sealer. Went on easy 3-5 coats per arrow. Too many bubbles solids floating on top. Pulled the dye up into sealer and the color faded, so much it got on the rags I was using. I do like the low odor so I can use it in the house. I tried the sanding between coats but with the dye coming off the arrow this was a bad way to apply. I had to put more dye on some of read more the arrows.

OK not the Quaility I expected

The clear leaves a yellow tint. Did not mix well. Had a problem with bubbles. No matter how much I shook the bottle there were still chunks floating and stuff stuck to top of bottle and bottom. I can not afford the dipper so I wiped it on. It wipes on just fine. I do like the easy clean up.

So Far So Good

I have just finished dipping three dozen shafts with 5 coats each. It is so nice to be able to dip in the basement as it is virtually odorless. The verdict is still out as to how durable it is as it seems to be less solid than the Bohning Supercoat that I normally use. Time will tell how well the cresting and feathers adhere.

Air Bubbles

I had read comments about air bubbles and decided to try this product anyway because of easy cleanup. I was disappointed at the number of air bubbles. I am considering purchasing the Speed Coat Dipping System. This might eliminate the air bubbles while keeping the cleanup easy.

Very Pleased

I am very pleased with the results. Although it seems to always leave a few bumps (bubbles) here and there no matter what I do. It is very easy to apply and very very easy to clean up. The arrows look incredible with three coats, and the white color sealer makes a beautiful cap. Make sure you use Duco Cement, because the recommended Fletch-Tite Platinum does not work. The Duco Cement read more holds very well to 3River's water based sealer.

My son and I make "youth arrows" which we sell on stick bow, we have been using this product for about a year now and like the results. As mentioned by others its important to allow the bubbles to settle when loading the dip tube, this is key to not having bubbles. I use 0000 steel wool between coats for good adheson between coats. The product dries fast and is very durable. read more I like the fumeless aspect of this product especially around children.

If you like chunky paint, this is perfect for you. I'm not sure what this stuff is,it is not a good arrow finish.

Excellent product!

I fill the pro-dipper with the sealer the evening before, to prevent bubbles. The result is fantastic. Just after the first coat you can see how good it covers. I hang the shafts and with our climate here in Italy, they take 30-45 minutes to dry. Don't use it with the speed coat system: the shaft will need too many coats to be covered properly. Deep the shaft directly in the pro-dipper read more with the sealer.

Not likely. If you sand between coats and apply them thinly and evenly between sanding three or four times it should be good to go. I have had excellent results with 3Rivers water based shaft sealer. Extremely happy with the product! I have shot my arrows into several types of targets and the finish held up to them all so far.

I am just now getting around to using this sealer to make some a 12 years ago

I am just now getting around to using this sealer to make some arrows with a stiffer spine for experimentation, and I don't have enough experience with it yet to give You a definitive answer; but, after refreshing my recollection about why I, personally, DID NOT purchase this Eco dipper by watching again the film demonstration of the product's use and reflecting on my own years of making arrows, just as several of the reviewers hint at, I too think this product seems slick, but achieving good performance will depend on the proper consistency of the dip or stain being used. This specific sealer, according to the label, is described as having "high solids", which means that it is a water-based suspension not a compound, and, like most water-based treatments, somewhat thin in its consistency, which is why I rejected buying the Eco dipper for this specific liquid. I suspect its properties mean that it WOULD NOT WORK AS WELL with any water-based suspension as it would with any lacquer-based liquid. Any lacquer-based liquid would have that perfect, mildly viscous consistency You look for to use a devise like this effectively, where the mild surface tension of the fluid conflicts with the device just enough to leave a coating of, say, a few mils, which is exactly what You want when using lacquer-based sealers. In fact, the demonstrator mentions that if You have a problem with consistency, "just add a little acetone". He's assuming lacquer as a base, because You would NEVER add acetone to water to change the viscosity. So, given the in between sanding, etc. necessary to make this product perform up to its design, I'm using the old-fashioned rag method with appropriate gloves. I like old-fashioned; it may be slow, but it works every time it's tried. Hope this helps.... -- Curt S.
