Besides using the hooks and stretch cord for the obvious use of holding gear on your pack. Keep a pair of your homemade mini bungee cords in your vehicle, especially during the winter months. Wrap them around your pants cuffs to keep them out the snow lying on your mat. Keeps the wife happy.
