God's Time is the Right Time
I set it up in the garden on a little pedestal and because compass declination is not precise, I used my longitude to figure local time at noon (12:53 here in Burbank) and oriented the sundial so the gnomon cast the narrowest shadow. After a few days of checking accuracy, I set all my house clocks to sundial time. Why? Because noontime sun exposure is so important for body repairs… read more because noon is when you get the most UVB for the other UV. And your circadian (daily) rhythms are so much better: optimistic in the morning, relaxed and happy at night. The reason is because UVB exposure makes a hormone that goes into a receptor and then into a cell and then clamps onto the nucleus and spins the DNA around to expose the repair programs! It's not just about calcium!
Interesting and fun historic item.
Item is of excellent quality and great historic meaning
Fun little device
It's a fun little knick-knack. A little heavy, but that makes it feel substantial. I found it a little hard to find the shadow, but when I could discern it, it was surprisingly accurate, +/- a half hour. Good enough. I like it.
Really Nice!!
I was very surprised when I received this compass. For one, it has a very nice finish that has plenty of surface for engraving if desired. It is a good size and one noteworthy thing about this compass is the weight. It has a very solid construction and comes with a cover so it fits nicely in the pocket. I also like the fact that the sundial folds up and down to accommodate the… read more cap. I initially decided to purchase this compass, not only because it is very nice, but because I make walking/hiking sticks and was going to attempt an inlay using one of these compass/sundials. It turned out the diameter was slightly larger than the diameter of the Live Oak hiking stick I am currently working on, so I have decided to keep it in my everyday pack and in my pocket when necessary. All in all, this is a beautiful compass and if you are on the fence about it, I can certainly say that it is really great quality and I cannot imagine someone not appreciating this compass/sundial. I hope this has been helpful. Best regards.

Whats the time mr wolf?
this is one classy piece of kit everyone I've shown it to wants one! Being an engraver the first thing I had to do was engrave a nice big stag on the cover! next I made a hand stitched leather case to protect this little gem. The sundial realy works! I carry it everywhere!
Yes, they will tell you the approximate time.
The compass works great and is accurate. The sundial also works and gives the user an approximate time, granted conditions are right (i.e. not cloudy) and there is enough sun to cast a shadow. It can take some patience to read a sundial correctly in general, so the fact that this is handheld size might take some practice to get comfortable reading it correctly. Nonetheless, it is a wonderful feature to have on a compass and the compass overall works great. I would definitely recommend it. Hope this helps.
The dimensions are 1 3/4" in diameter and 3/4" thick.
