Good kit

This was a very good kit for beginners. it was very easy and quick. the blade was perfect, handle was the best size, instructions were easy to follow. the only downside was the notch was a little too big to fit the blade. although not enough hafting could cover it, the knife looked quite great overall.

Very good knife

Overall good do-it-yourself product. The hide glue provided is more than enough for two jobs. However, it is not waterproof, and I went once-over the entire knife with hot beeswax, waterproofing it. A nice piece always with me on the recreational battlefield!

this knife i some times use to open USPS parcels just to see how it performs, as well as letters. I do however am conscious that it is not steel and can break.I am very conscious of its ability's. i cant say enough for its quality. Just make sure not to over use it. yes it is a workable piece. get one put it together and cut a stake with it on a paper plate and you will be proud.

This is a fun project for both youngsters and adults. The blade is very well knapped. The one that came with my kit appears to be of Chert. It is sharp enough to do some cutting but don't expect a razor sharp edge. The handle is of Osage, a good choice since Osage is a very strong wood. I did have to modify the slot in which the blade fits into the handle. This was done in read more order to get the blade to set straight instead of at an angle. A little whittling with my leatherman serrated blade did the trick. The gut hafting is O.K., but I prefer several layers of real sinew. I used processed sinew purchased from this site. The amount of hide glue provided is more than enough to glue in the blade and the gut hafting, or two layers of sinew. Clean up is easy since hide glue is water based. Just make sure to go easy on the water. Too much water can dilute the glue.

about how big is the finished knife? what is the approximate length and width of the stone itself?

The one that I took right off of the shelf measured 9 inches for 14 years ago

The one that I took right off of the shelf measured 9 inches for the over all length when the knife is finished. Blade length is almost four inches and the width is 1 3/4.

in its entire lenght measures, on mine as is finished 8 inches. 13 years ago

in its entire lenght measures, on mine as is finished 8 inches. This depends on how much fitting would be involved in the halfting. I really did not need to make any adjustments in fitting as there was one direction in the placement of the slot in the haft that fit almost perfectly straight. any kit usually requires very minor fitting, this is a part of the learning experience. The instructions are very simply set forward as to give the best pleasure in producing an item to be proud of for years to come. length of the stone, this can very none are going to be exatcly alike so you can be assured that each peice is as induvidual as you and iare made in varing minor lengths and widths. My blade is app 4and one half inches long from point tip to halfting but. Width is 1.5 inches from halft and tapers gently to tip or point. I hope that my answer may help those who aspire. BUT REMBER NEVER GIVE UP> thank you JB. Many Blessings. Have patience dont hurry and keep the faith.
