Great for a traditiomal bow

I used 8 of these to back a bow. Honestly, I wish I had.ordered 20 to get more layers.... but that gets pricey. 8 got a nice single layer on the back and sides of the bow but that's it...no extras....no crowned back.....just a basic serving. I cant complain it definitely supports the wood. Try it with hide glue like I did. Works perfect for backing a bow.

Awesome

It doesn't look like much at first but once it's processed, it becomes apparent there is alot.

Nice product. Use correctly

I purchased these for backing a bow. The great thing about them is they actually end up being about twice as long as the deer hank, and they come in a wide sheet. Warning: The fact they come in a sheet makes you want to wrap them right along the back of the bow as a backing. Hold off on that for these reasons: 1. It won't lay flat 2. There is an uneven distribution of fibers read more from one side to the other so it will invite limb twist. 3. The fibers curve, so getting everything lined up is tricky. Instead, just like the deer hank, separate it into groups of fibers (around the width of a shoe string or less) and lay them on individually. You can ensure a more even distribution if you do it like this. Also one more tip, unlike the deer hank, you need to soak this stuff in warm water for at least a minute or two. The hank on the other hand can be used after its been submerged for as little as 3 seconds. Pascal

I would recommend at least 6-8 strips to make sure you have enough length and strand count to accommodate the length of the string and the weight of the bow.

how many of these dose it take to back a 70" bow and are there some woods that should not be sinew backed

We recommend using the Leg Sinew http://www.3riversarchery.com/Bow+Building+Backings+%26+Lumber++Leg+Sinew_c49_s130_p0_i4311_product.html for bow backing as can get more quantity out of the Leg sinew. I would recommend using 6-8 packs for an average bow. Better to go with the 8 as you do not want to run out. I am not familiar with any wood that can not be sinew backed.

There are some types of wood, mostly softwoods, that should not be made into bows even with backing, because they are likely to break. Examples: Pine, cedar, fir, poplar, etc
