You will need to soak your rawhide in warm water to rehydrate it and make it more workable. Don't soak it too long or the fibers will start to break down.

Experienced leather workers can also cure and waterproof their rawhide using fat, wax, resin, or tar.

Rawhide remnants are sold in 16 ounce bundles.
