Great for the price
The shoulders were too thick to allow them to screw into the inserts, so I worked then down with a drill and sandpaper.
Great blunts
I have been shooting these blunts for about a year now and was impressed enough to return for a positive review. I love em. they are durable and have all the advantages of a field point without the penetration. We shoot targets, stumps, tennis balls, pine cones, the occasional small game animal with them.
What you see is what you get.
Cheap, easy to use and no frills. I can stump shoot all afternoon and not worry about damaging my blunts (I am pretty hard on equipment). Hard to beat for the price. I have yet to use it for hunting but as it only comes in the one weight size I will probably stick to grouse and squirrel (I like to use heavy weights on jacks and cottontails.
Its a good buy
Great and happy about it The 100 grains spine is perfect
Perfect for hay bails
I shoot a 422 gr. gold tip arrow, cut to 27" with a 27" draw at 70 pounds for 271 FPS. I shoot hay bails (straw). With normal field points my arrows punch almost completely through the target. It only takes a few times of pass throughs to take off the fletchings. With these flat points, my arrows only go halfway through and are easy to pull out. At 90 yards, I cannot tell the difference… read more between these and standard FP in accuracy. They are also great for foam targets. But on cheap FP only targets, they punch large holes in them. It will destroy a FP only bag type target quickly.
Great for small game
These are perfect for squirrels and rabbits. I keep a few on some arrows in my quiver when a broadhead is going to be too much for the little critters.
Nothing better
I've been shooting steel blunts on ground squirrels for 35 years in Idaho. They used to be EVERYONE's standby. Crazy that they're hard to find now...thank you 3RIVERS! Inside of 50 yards they fly like field tips, after that I add 3-4 yards to ranged distance. Field tips zip thru squirrels and they escape. These blunts have just enough thump to shock kill and often do not pass thru.… read more Even burried into a stump they pull out...field tips do not. Skips are 10% of field tips. Stump Shooting - Small Game
Used steel blunts to stump shoot & hunt for years. Screw on or glue on they work great.
Cheap and Sturdy head
I tried stump shooting with these heads. They fly just like the field points and stuck nice and shallow into rotting wood but very easy to remove, or bounce back a little when I hit some harder wood. However one time I missed and one of my arrow hit a rock underneath. The head and insert collapsed into the arrow but after I peel out the broken arrow, I found the head only had a… read more tiny scratch on them. Very sturdy heads that will outlast my arrows. I also use them to heat up the glue when I try to replace some inserts on my arrow, since they are not expensive and offer nice grip for my pilar. Highly recommended if you need something to stump shoot with.
Nice blunts
These blunts are well made and work well. I have only used them for back yard target practice. However, I have no doubt that they will work well for hunting small game and stump shooting. In fact I have missed my target a few times and put my arrow through the gate of my privacy fence and not damaged the blunt at all. In fact on one shot I hit the steel gusset for the gate and… read more put a 1/16th of an inch dent in the steel without any damage to the blunt. Needless to say it destroyed my aluminum arrow shaft and pushed the blunt and insert up the shaft a couple of inches.
They should take a 5/16 tip.
they will skip off
They will bury. Used in conjunction with a slip over blunt tip they will not bury in.
Yes, its 8-32 thread
Yep - just get the correct diameter.
The 145gr and 160gr are only available in the glue on style. The screw ins are limited to 100gr and 125gr.
100 and 125 for the 5/16 screw in. It depends on the range some want you to use rubber.
With this set up you should not have nay problems for groundhog size game or smaller. If you decide to go after larger game as deer with a broadhead I would recommend to slide a weight tube in the arrow to bring up your overall weight for better penetration.
I've shot dozens of rabbits using these tips, though I use the wood arrow version, wood doesn't bounce as much. . My son also has taken rabbits with this tip
I don't think I will use them for anything bigger than rabbits. They are great for stump shooting but I don't think they are very deadly heads.
It would depend on where you hit it. For body shots, I have had no problem taking out grouse and bunnies with these. However I did shot a grey squirrel in the shoulder with a 60 lb. bow and even though it sent the squirrel flying off the branch, the arrow literally bounced back. My dog ended up climping about 12 feet up a tree to retrieve it(strange dog who has an extreme hatred towards squirrels,) but it did eventually die. If possilbe I'd recommend head shots if possible. Had a friend who accedently killed a garden raiding doe with a rubber blunt out of a 35 lb bow.
