Working on a beautiful Pyramid bow with this product
First order unexceptable . second order useable .
bamboo used for backing bows . quality seems to have gone down hill since my last purchase . had to return the first order. second order was just ok . I worked with it and made it work . cut my bow blank out today. looks good . first time using e 40 . urac 185 is much easier to use.
Not satisfied with piece nodes too deep
by the time i planed down the bamboo through the low spots, it was useless, the nodes were too deep.
Disappointing backing strip
I was really disappointed in there selection they made from my online purchase. It was cracked, warped, and has a high crown which is more the fault of the supplier. My opinion it was harvested to soon it should have grown longer. I needed to steam it to straighten it, which isn't as easy as lumber. I am also gonna try to steam it again to flatten it some. The next time I need to… read more purchase some bamboo I am going to make a trip to their showroom so I can hand select it instead of leave it up to them.
About What I Expected
The bamboo was as advertised though the wall thickness was less that what I prefer. Fairly east to steam bend once planed flat.
Impressed with bamboo backing quality
I've used short lengths of bamboo for backing before (to reduce shipping costs), but didn't get nearly the consistent segment length and thickness this full length piece offered. It was clearly from a very large bamboo, and the piece I got is fully 2" wide full length. Working it in one piece makes it much easier to balance the upper and lower limb during tillering. This product… read more is not pre-planed, so you need some way of taking it down to a flat bonding surface. I use a Bosch electric planer and take it down full width in multiple passes until the edges are almost sharp. When the ends are later tapered, the edges at the tips will show somewhat thicker, and help stiffen the tips for maximum performance.
Excellent product
excllent suff!...with a little work it made for excellent backing...very workable...and had a very consistent elastistity throughout...I used it for a self bow and also a trout net... smooth on or gorilla glue worked well on two different try's...
I'd buy more.
Purchased six at a time all arrived in good shape. Best know what your in for planning boo. Take your time, my small jointer worked great.
Beautiful and Tough as Nails
I used this product to back a Hickory bow stave that I purchased on line. I made a "Dan Perry" style bow with 2" of reflex. I used some coarse grit sand paper and a long section of 2X4, to sand the concave side of the bamboo flat first, this gave me a good surface to glue up. I lightly scraped the outside surface of the bamboo, leaving the nodes intact, I carefully heat tempered… read more the bamboo with a small propane torch. Then stained and sealed it. The nodes were 4-6" apart. This bow is light as a feather and shoots like a dream.
Sorting Required
Sorry to say but there is to much variance in the node separation for one end to the other. And, the nodes could be further apart. Suggest 3 Rivers sort their stock based upon specific request from the bowyer as to what length bow he needs to construct.
Uncrowned would mean it has been planed and flattened.
These are meant for backing a bow. I would not recommend trying to use these to make a set of limbs on a bow. We do have the tapered lamination's that you can use to make limbs.
I would say no unless it is just a prop and not to be used for shooting arrows. Also the last time i bought the unplaned backing strips they were too dry and split. Get your self a "Bowyers Bible vol. 4" . it lays out just about everything you would need to know on how to get started building bows. Billy
Yes you can use Titebond 3 to glue bamboo to the back of a wood bow.
You can but it's recommended to use smooth on which is what I've used with no issues on 2 bows.
Yes, I have heard of people having success using tight bond 3. I personally prefer smooth on
Yes . I used it on two bows with no problem. Lots of clamps. Lots.
It appears to be about 1/4" thick.
approximately 1/4"
Generally about 1/4", you'll need to thin it down to about 1/8". I use a belt sander, but you can use a joiner Sent from my iPhone
The bamboo slats in most cases will be on the belly side of the bow.
We do not receive any information telling us what the species this supplier is using or the diameter is. If I was take a guess the diameter will be a least 5 to 6 inches.
The Bamboo backing is sold by the each. You will get one piece per order.
To flatten it you would have to plain or sand the backing to get it flat. And to apply this to the bow i would use unibond. Its item # is 4430-1.
Heat treating helps to strengthen the cells of the bamboo and make them stronger. It is not necessary, but it does help.
You can use the Bamboo for backing. Hickory would work as well. It will be a personal preference between the two.
