Forged 6" Draw Knife Reviews

A superb tool

This is a real precision tool. The steel is first rate, and takes an exceptional edge. Based on the advice of others, I use a buffing wheel to hone the edge and keep it razor sharp. The offset handle make it very comfortable to use. I've only need carving bows for a short time and this knife has really sped up and improved my work. One particularly distinctive thing about this read more knife is that it has a wide, double beveled blade that makes it extremely easy to control the depth of the cut. You don't have to flip it over like a single-beveled blade to very the cut. With practice, you can take off a thin shaving or a thick chunk, depending on how you tilt the knife. I actually have two drawknives from this maker (Arno), a straight bladed one, as 3Rivers sells, and a concave bladed one I found on a certain auction site. I use the straight blade for carving and shaping, and the concave one, with the blade kept dulled (on the advice of Jim Hamm in The Bowyer's Bible) for stripping bark.

I'm making my own bows and thought I would try this. Once you learn how to use it, almost anything is possible. Just don't think you can use it right off the bat. It is easy to learn and actully sort of instinctive. This is a great addition to my tool chest!

I do understand that I purchased this flat blade drawknife from an archery site, but is this also good for carving wood baseball bats without a lathe? If not, then would you recommend a drawknife with a concave or convex blade for that purpose?

I would think it would work well even with a straight blade, but 6 years ago

I would think it would work well even with a straight blade, but this is not something we have tried.

This draw knife is made in France from very good high grade steel that is forged which makes it very tough and able to hold an edge.

Have you used this on any bowbuilding projects? I was wondering how it performed versus other drawknives. Thanks.

This Draw knife works well and it holds its edge very well also. I would say I like this Knife over others because of rounded handles and its ability to hold and edge longer than the cheaper ones on the market.

Is the blade 8" or is it 8" overall?

Thank you for asking. Upon measuring the blade length of the 8" draw knife they are now 6" and not 8" as previously stated. The vendor changed lengths on us without our knowledge. The description is being updated for both online and in our free print catalog.
