Hickory Backing Reviews

No attention to detail

I ordered 3 hickory backings. All of them had some real wonky grain structure. These had a good grain structure on one side but they would trail off the side 2/3 to 3/4 way up the piece or go from 7 to 9 growth rings on one side and widen to 4 to 5 on the other. Pretty unpredictable. I've ordered hickory backings from another company before and they had pretty straight grain read more structure and almost all the grains ran the full length of the backing without stepping off the sides. Also wish they would make these 2" wide like other companies so we could at least choose the better part to use. 1.5" width ends up being extremely limiting unless you send a perfect piece... and these were not. I gave 3 stars since they were at least usable.

Waste of money

The grain was so poor that it was unusable as a backing. For the price paid I'd have hoped for something better.

I would purchase this product again. Thanks.

I used this product to back a low poundage hickory stave flat bow. Very consistent thickness and width. Good product.

Exactly what I needed

I used it to back an osage bow. The grain was excellent and was exactly as advertised.

Not for a beginner. And over priced for a master.

I just received this to use on a bow I've been commissioned to make. Sadly, it's less than ideal. The grain was ok, but the front has two massive table saw gouges in it. Then, when I checked the back, I saw that it had been planned, but very badly. It appears the machine used is not adjusted well, and the person who did it sped up considerably half way through. It was in no way read more ready to glue. I see that some have gotten good ones. I just wish the one and only one I bought was. Between sanding the table saw gouges and re-planing it, I'll lose half the thickness. If I didn't have a planer, I'd be screwed. Which makes me think this wouldn't be great for someone just starting out.

Exactly what it said it was

I used it right out of the box without problems. I would have liked it to be a bit longer (76") as I was making an English style longbow. I made my first successful bow with this product. The backing is so strong that the bow ended up at 50# instead of the 35-40# I was planning.

I would buy this again

Good piece of wood, usable right from the box. Straight, even grain. My only remark is it could use a little rough sanding - the saw marks were still visible but this just gives it a good surface to glue to.

I have ordered about 10 of these in the past year. All of them have made wonderful bows. I glue them on right out of the package and sand them down to a finish. I have never recieved one that I was not able to glue right on out of the package. The performance is outstanding. Makes all the bows I make durable and reliable. Wonderful product for the price.

You can use this in replacement for linen backing. The linen backing that is on the bow now will have to be removed and the bow planed or flattened to accept the hickory. Once the back is smooth you will want to glue to Hickory on. Once the glue has dried you will then have to retiller the bow.
