Turns yellow and stops working

These compasses look great and work well initially. I mounted several in walking sticks. My walking stick is over a year old, my wife's about 6 months, and my moms, 3 months. You can set them next to each other and see the yellow gradient starting. My compass is so yellow you can't read it. It also quit working (shock of walking stick?) I opened it up and found that the fluid read more smells like kerosene. Everybody knows kerosene gets yellow with age. So these compasses are all destined to fail. The "magnet" looks like a really small piece of steel that was magnetized. It isn't a durable ceramic magnet. These compasses are really nice looking. They look like instruments. But I would not recommend putting yourself in a situation where you must rely on it. I have one that came in a bear take down bow. It hasn't started turning yellow yet, but has quit working. If the manufacturer changed fluids to something that won't yellow, and improved the magnet, these would be super nice compasses.

Nice addition to any bow

Fred Bear equipped all of his personal bows with small compassess. I've started doing the same, no matter the brand or style, even my best custom wares. This assures my compass is always with me while bowhunting, giving me peace of mind when slogging back to the truck well after dark or in heavy fog common in northern Idaho. Not as difficult as you might think to install, but read more you do need to invest in a proper "Forester" (SP?) drill bit to assure a neat job. Epoxy after to assure a good seal, preventing moisture getting into your riser wood and ruining the wood.

Great Add-on for your bow

Mounting this compass flush in the face of the riser was a breeze and it becomes very effective when traveling through heavy blowdown areas and swamps, as the bow is hanging in your hand with the front of the riser up and the compass is right there to just glance at whenever you have a need to get your directions.

For my uses it is just fine.

Small, but functional.

Installing the compass in a walking stick.

Don't inlay it!!!!!!!

I inlayed one in my bow riser. After 5 years a bubble so large developed, the compass won't turn. It rattles when I shoot.

Works great in bow risers

I have inserted a few of these in my bow risers, and have had no problems. Use a good quality forstner bit and they fit right in and hold with a little superglue.

Very happy

Great product. Drill a shallow hole in your bow's riser, set with epoxy, and forget about it till you need it. Then it's right there at your fingertips.

Mini Compass

I use carpenters Cabinet Mounting Cement to attach a mini compass below the grip on my one piece hunting bows on the same side as the shelf. On overcast days its a simple matter to hold the bow flat for a few seconds to confirm magnetic north and deduce or confirm direction of travel. This does NOT work on takedown bows with metallic components.

Well yes and no. The idea would be to take a drill bit and counter sink a hole the diameter of the compass to the desired depth. Then you would glue the compass into the hole. If you prefer not to have a flush mounted compass, then yes. One could just glue it on. This compass in the riser of a bow is sort of a tribute to the old Bear Archery bows that would sometimes have a compass installed in the riser.

I glued it on top of my quiver with Crazy Glue. It holds on pretty well. However, the compass is not particularly accurate. At times, I have to tap it a few times for it to point north.

I have installed a few of these with very good results. You should use a forstner bit (11/16" for the 18mm compass) to make an inset hole for the compass. Be sure to not go too deep. Apply some Barge Cement into the hole and a light layer on the back of the compass. Insert and let dry for 24 hrs.
