This 0.47mm Silk thread has a strand break strength of 6.4 lbs. I purchased this for use in making a 100% silk bowstring (black silk with green silk servings)for my 52# Bear Super Kodiak Grayling Green 64" recurve bow. I've seen 100% silk strings last for years on Asian bows. The thing to remember if you want to make a string for you bow is to make it about 1" shorter than a… read more standard string becaues the silk will stretch a fair amount (so I'd make a 59" string for my 64" bow instead of a 60" string). Also, I would highly recommend that you pre-stretch your string to 90% of its break strength before serving your centre serving. For me this meant stretching my string to 195 lbs for my continuous loop string (52# x 4 = 208 lb string is required. At 6 lbs per strand that is 36 strands with a true break strength of 230.4 lbs. 230.4 x .9 = 207.36 lbs). Once the strands are fully stretched they are about 0.29mm instead of the stated 0.47mm diameter. I would also recommend pre-stretching your serving thread (if using this silk) or keep the tension set to around 5 lbs. on your serving tool to stretch the strands as you work. Excellent material!

I've used this to bind fletching on two dozen arrows so far, and it adds a nice touch. It will wear down if's constantly passed through a target, but using some sort of clear drying glue over it will help to keep it secure and protected.

I use this pure silk to wrap feathers on arrow shafts to help hold the feathers down, and believe me it works great. It's worth trying too see for yourself.

Used the black thread to whip the self nocks and wrap the feathers on some arrows that I used in a match. these worked and looked great with the Ace Classic points ('bodkins'). Would have liked to have had white though.
This is the best,good for fishing too!

The short answer is: I don't know. Although silk is remarkably strong stuff, I suspect this thread would be too fine, and you might want something tough and thicker like sinew. But I haven't tried it, so I really don't know. I use silk thread to whip leading and trailing ends of fletching. (See attached photos, if they came through.) Good Luck! -- Chuck

I wouldn't use it to haft stone points. When I use it to bind fletching, glue or varnish is needed to secure it properly - other wise they wear. For hafting stone points, perhaps artificial sinew would be a better choice (though I haven't tried it). Of course - if you actually shoot with it, the sinew will wear as well - I'm not certain how much longevity will be added if you finish it with polyurethane.

I am having a hard time getting an accurate measurement with the micrometer. It crushes the thread. I know that the nylon serving material is .015 and the silk looks about 1/3 smaller. I would say that it is close to .010.
