Samick Discovery ILF Recurve Reviews

Use only with light draw weights

G Mac

I used this with 45lb limbs for about a year and a half. Got some 55lb limbs for big game. The limb bolts failed catastrophically on the second shot with 55 pound limbs causing the whole bow to fly apart. The aluminum hardware on the riser is inadequate and unsafe for use with higher draw weight limbs.

This was my first forray into the recurve and take down world. Coming from longbows, I was simultaneously surprised at the speed this thing puts out even with heavy arrows. My tiller bolts did gall very quickly, but I have since fixed it. The grips is cheap plastic, but it feels better with out any grip. It is very noisy but that may just be ILF, i dont know. Ive put felt every read more where and with some paracord silencers I made, it is very quiet. I have the foam and carbon limbs, at 50#, and popped an elevated rest on it. What I like about it most is it is a total all weather bow. I live in a very rainy and miserable place, and that said, this thing shoots the same no matter what. Leave it strung for days and days, no problem. Bow quivers, stabilizers, rests, etc. You can put it all on here or leave it bare. Fun for fiddlers. I dont shoot it as much just because while i like the recurve speed and platform, I prefer the longbow still.

Beware

Beware. I bought 2 of these and additional limbs. The link bolts can't be adjusted while it's strung which is not a big deal however the bolts are aluminum and gwauld up way too easy. This happened earlier on with the bow I bought for my wife and after calling 3 Rivers I was told they do not sell replacement parts for the Discovery and that I should Google it. I had to take it to read more a machine shop to get repaired. Now my bow has the limb stuck in it and won't come out and the limb bolt is stuck and the Allen head socket on the top is stripped. I guess I will be making another trip to the machine shop to have it drilled out and google for a replacement limb bolt if I want to ever change my limbs. Or maybe just try and sell my $250 r3 foam limbs

Really fantastic bow

I've always loved traditional wooden bows. Refused to use anything else. My husband got this as a gift for me. It's so fun to shoot. Really easy to care for and very dependable.

Very nice

My dad has been shooting his bow for several years now and recently bought me a beginner bow to see if I liked archery. I love it! Bought a Samick sage and shot it a few times and knew I wasn't going to be satisfied with it so I returned it and bought a Discovery from 3 rivers. I think the bow is amazing and really enjoy dam near everything about it. I bought my wife a sage at 25# read more to see if she liked the sport. She did ! Knowing she would not be satisfied long term ( Me really) we returned it while the window was open and ordered a forest green Discovery from 3 rivers. She loves it but we had to go with 30# as that's the lowest weight they offer but she said it draws easier than the 25# sage.My original order was the R1 wood core 45# and I wanted something a little easier to shoot all day so I also ordered 35# R3 foam core for mine. I wish I had gotten foam core on all of them It's worth the 50 bucks. These are great bows and really a joy to hold shoot and own. The only problem I have is I'm always looking for the best thing out there, which has put my eyes on the black wolf, would like to see a review comparing the black wolf, Discovery and the DAS bows offered from 3 rivers. If you have any hesitations about buying the Discovery, Don't! It's a great shooting, great looking, great feeling bow

New to the sport, started with an inexpensive bow to see if I enjoyed the sport, and I do ! Ordered a #50 Samick sage off the web and it was a really nice shooting bow but I felt it was to much to draw weight and really liked the Samick Discovery, so I sent the sage back after about a week and ordered the Samick Discovery from 3rivers at 45#. I'm brand new to archery but I have read more to say I think this is an amazing bow. It is 60AMO but came with a 55" string. Being new I did some research and could not find anything that supports a string over 4" shorter than the AMO size, I bought a T square and had a brace height of 8 5/8" I tried untwisting it but to get to anything below 8 1/4 the string looks like it wants to come apart. I have tried adjusting the limb bolts to decrease the draw weight some but it doesn't feel like it changed anything. I ordered a 56" string and it had a brace height at 7 1/2 out the package without any twisting either way. The bow feels like it has a much smoother draw now but I have only been able to shoot it about 25 times due to weather. I have also ordered the foam core at 35# thinking it will be better for working on my form and change back and forth to the 45# wood core limbs. Overall I am very pleased with this bow and think it is a joy to hold, look at and shoot. I have also ordered a forest green riser ( mine is black) with 30# limbs for my wife, should be here tomorrow

Great ILF Bow

I started with a Samick Sage then wanted to move to a better bow. After reading reviews and watching videos on Samick Discovery I bought one. It's got to be one of the best values with the high quality and relatively low price. I bought the foam/carbon limbs in 35lb and 45lb. The bow feels great in the hand with a smooth draw and no stacking at 29". I did go with an Accutune adjustable read more strike plate and it was a breeze to tune. I could not be happier with my choice and the price was a bonus. I would have expected to pay more for a bow of this quality

I shoot it off the shelf

Tom

When I bought it I bought a rest and plunger and never used them the bow is designed to shoot off the shelf just not cut to center I stuck two 3m arrow strike plates over one another and it's perfect so if your worried because you like the shelf don't be one thing that's odd is how shallow the sight taped holes are won't work with standard sight screws will need shorter screws or read more some washers either way not enough to make me upset with this bow

Geat Bow. Very Fast

THis is my first ILF bow. I've been looking at a variety for about a year. Bow is very fast, very smooth. Price point is remarkable for a machined not cast riser, Foam core carbon limbs. Was leaning toward the TradTech which is an awesome set up, but the Speed tests that 3Rivers did sold me. Mine is 45lb and with arrows in the 9 gr/lb range, I'm getting around 190+ ft per second. read more Bow rocks!

I would recommend this biw

I just built a bit of a bumper on the shelf to bring it up a lit 4 years ago

I just built a bit of a bumper on the shelf to bring it up a little, not much, same with strike plate. And cover as you would any off the shelf material and go shoot it...arrow flight will tell you everything you need to know and adjust as required.. Shoots great off the shelf.

I bought this bow and love it, but...the reason I bought it was because my 53 lb tomahawk was a little too much for my aging shoulders. I got the discovery with 45 lb limbs and they are pulling 50+ at my 29 inch draw. this was after I adjusted the limb bo

The limb bolt adjustment would be the only way to drop poundage 4 years ago

Hello Art, at this time it is a "gray area" with customs for the 3 years ago

Hello Art, at this time it is a "gray area" with customs for the Philippians on what is considered a weapon. I would check first to see if they consider archery as a weapon. This is what we are seeing in regards to shipping restrictions for the Philippians. "Firearms and weapons and parts thereof including replicas of weapons; ammunition."

What is the difference between wood core carbon vs foam core carbon ? Which one is more durable and good for a beginner level archer.

I really like foam core limbs. They are just as durable as wood 4 years ago

I really like foam core limbs. They are just as durable as wood but a little smoother and slightly faster than wood core limbs.

This has been debated over and over, but really to me, a little 4 years ago

This has been debated over and over, but really to me, a little "common sense" goes a long ways in some of these product comparisons. What we are comparing, in your question, are two different "cores" Wood cores have been industry standard for decades now, and are a great limb. Foam cores are newer technology, and offer an overall "quicker" limb due to being slightly less mass weight. I don't believe you will see any difference, as far as durability, between the two. Basically what I have seen with the foam limbs is that they are ever so slightly easier to draw (this is barely noticeable, but exist to somebody who shoots often) and slightly quicker, translating to a Slightly quicker arrow. At the end of the day, with either limb, the Discovery is a wonderful bow. The Discovery limbs have an excellent finish and look to them JM
