Stanley Spoke Shave Reviews

Great tool once you tune it

I've been using this spokes have for bow making and general woodworking for some time. As it comes from Stanley, it's a bit rough, but with a bit of work you can turn it into an excellent tool. For that you'll need a series of flat sharpening stones, diamond hones, or just a sheet of glass and wet/dry sandpaper from 200 to 600 (or 1200, if you really want a smooth surface) grit. read more I used an inexpensive diamond set from HF. Start by disassembling the tool. First step is to flatten and polish the sole (base), making it perfectly flat, and going from grit to grit until it's mirror smooth. Next flatten the surface of the iron where it contacts the blade. Now move on to the blade. Start by flattening the back of the blade and polishing it as you did the sole of the tool. Last, put an edge on the blade. For this, I like the Veritas sharpening jig which makes it easy to hold the right angle and put a micro-bevel on it. The proper way to use a spokes have is to adjust it so the blade takes a paper-thin shaving- more that than and it'll just clog up. If you need to remove large amounts of wood, use a drawknife or an axe.

After proper adjustment, my students can shave with ease With hundreds of bows built, I have never experienced a failure of one of these spokeshaves. Stays sharp with proper use. Haven't found anything wrong with this. Didn't need to sharpen it or anything, cuts beautifully and very easy to adjust. Made my entire bow with this and a file for the nocks.

Perfect tool for the job
