Birchwood Casey has offered this durable gloss finish for many, many years as a gun stock finish. It didn't take bowyers long to figure out that it is also an excellent bow finish. Easy to apply by hand. The more coats you hand rub, the nicer the finish will be. Especially nice over snakeskin backings. 3oz. bottle. Wicked good stuff!
Stuff is great. Use a rubber glove coated finger (you Don't want this on your skin!), apply THIN to avoid runs, wait 24 hours between applications, buff out between coats with a coffee filter and after several coats, you have an excellent finish. I use at least 7 coats on gun stocks, grips and Traditional bows. Yellows over time, but so does Fullerplast, the spray on finish manufacturers… read more used to use on bows and guitars in the 60's, 70's, etc.
Great finish
For an easy application on arrow shafts, I use a cotton ball to apply Tru-oil . Simply soak it and rub it on. 3 good coats does a great job. On wood/self bows the more coats you apply the nicer the finish will be. An annual or semi-annual application only serves to protect it better!
A bit too much shine on osage
Prefer boiled linseed oil for finishing Osage
Great product!
Great on snakeskin self bows
Good stuff
What can I say? Birchwood Casey has been around for a very long time. It is an excellent product. I use it to finish bows, or wood arrows. Simple and easy to use. Just rub it into the wood, and let dry. You can use however many coats you want, whether just for a sealer, or a deep finish. The more coats, the deeper the finish. I wait 24 hours between coats. Buff lightly with steel… read more wool between coats, and you're done. Good product.
My Favorite
I have been using Tru-Oil to finish my solid body electric custom guitars for over twelve years. Fourteen to Twenty coats, waiting 24 between applications with light 0000 steel wool in between. I apply by hand, rubbing on with a cloth. Top off with a coat or two of Butcher's Block wax for a fine sheen and good protection against liquids. The fact that it comes in a small container… read more is most handy, as it takes awhile to use up the pints and quarts that other oils come in before they go bad. I cannot recommend Tru-Oil too highly.
Super Product!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I used this product to finish a self long bow made of hickory and cherry. I hand rubbed three coats and the finish is outstanding. Really makes the wood grain "pop" and leaves a professional looking finish. Anyone can finish wood items with this product.
Great Product
I use a peice of a T-shirt to apply. Rub it in, Let it dry and you have a great bow finish. Repells water very good. Makes the grain stand out very well.
Yes you can apply tru-oil over stains. You will want to make sure you give sufficient time for the stain to dry before applying the oil.
Yes, it will seal the shafts. You can apply it by hand. The amount of coats is up to you. I would recommend at least three coats.
This is a gloss finish that is a bit more shiny than the Min Wax Satin finish. I will also see if we can get a picture online.
Used it on walnut rifle stocks for years. Very good sealant but very shiny. Used it on a hickory longbow but the reflection was a bit much. Doesn't distort the color of the natural wood, even on Osage. I like boiled linseed oil better, and you can buy a quart of it very cheaply. Original finish on black powder rifles. This works very well as an arrow finish but does take awhile to do by hand.
You should not have any issues with the Tru-Oil on the rawhide and glue.
Yes, you can use this for the finish by itself. I like the Thunderbird Sealer for a finish as well (Item #4450x).
Yes true-oil will work I do recommend two to three coat be put for sealing purposes.
Minwax polyurethane in satin
I do not have any information on an exact shelf life for Tru-Oil. As long as the bottle is stored with the cap on it should be fine until you use it all. I have never heard of it going bad before.
You will want to use a Poly spray on that bow. An oil finish works better for an all wood bow like a self bow or bamboo backed hickory for example.
