Very happy with it. It's really solidly built, everything's made of metal and it's pretty heavy - I had to pay an overweight shipping charge along with the other (light) stuff I ordered, but it was worth it. The manual flatly states that "it is accurate", and as far as I can tell it is. I've been using it pretty much continuously for a few months now, for making my own shafts from… read more douglas fir and aspen (poplar) boards from Lowes. Since I'm planing and sanding them to a target spine rather than a target diameter I have to just continuously test them on this scale, and it's been working fine. There is one caveat: the cam you use to zero the scale doesn't have enough range to work on really large diameter shafts - it will work on 3/8" but not on 7/16" - so if I were ever to want to make some half-inch warbow arrows for some reason it wouldn't work.

This is the least expensive spine tester on the market, but it's still very accurate and reliable. Rather than mount mine on the wall, I made a stand out of plywood and 1/2 oak that allows me to set it up level on my workbench. If you shoot wood, a spine gauge is almost a must-have, as it will help you to select the best arrows to match your bow, as well as give you a good idea… read more of which suppliers do the best job of spining the arrows they sell. (3Rivers shafts are right on the money, but I just received a batch of "40-45" shafts from an Ebay seller that measured 33-48!)

Quality material and workmanship. Easy to set up, with good instrcutions. I was impressed when I first saw it as I kept thinking this is not the same as in the picture of 3 Rivers catalog. In the catalog it looks like plastic but it is all metal. Pleasantly surprised! I like that it hangs on the wall out of the way but easy enough to reach for it when you need it.

For those making your own wooden arrows, this is a must. It's important to group your arrows according to pounds of spine, at least within +-5#, so your shots remain consistent (f you have a big discrepancy between arrows, how the arrows deflect off your bow will cause a lot of frustration, as you are constantly having to change your aim, being that everything else is the same ;).… read more When I re-measure the same arrow shaft (make sure the grain of the wood is vertical, not horizontal), it sometimes gives me a different reading of +-2#--personally, that's accurate enough. And that brings me to perhaps the downside of using this spine-tester: make sure you are reading it consistently from the same angle. I conveniently mounted it behind the spare room's door, so it wouldn't be an eye-sore; otherwise it would make a great conversation piece!

found out why i would have three arrows hit the mark and one would fly high by ten inches the last batch of 55/60 arrows i ordered were half what i ordered and the rest were 50/55 big difference when ur putting 160 grain tips on should hav e got one years ago

The Ace spine tester is easy to hang on the wall, easy to zero, easy to use, and the measurements are very repeatable. As an occasional wood arrow maker I can't imagine a better spine tester.

This is the one tool I should of bought years ago. It's really opened my eyes to the variability of some of the shafts I've bought in the past,,,and why I wasn't always getting the consistancy I should of.

Spine testers are generally on the expensive side (I guess it's a quantity and demand issue), however this is a high quality and comparatively low priced alternative that does the job well. Nicely constructed and easy to use. A must have for anyone who is making their own arrows, particularly if your creating them from billets. Why is the AS-MST only good for wood arrows? I understand the math theory for determining spine. Does it have to due with the 26" support spacing? Are aluminum and carbon shafts spined differently by not using 26" and maybe using a longer support spacing

I saw the one answer said, "This tester only measures wood arrow because everything is preset to measure at 26 inches." I make my wooden shafts at 30 inches, so would this spine tester still work at this length?

Why wont this work on aluminum or carbon if you are only wanting to see consistant spine around the shaft or compairing arrows of the same kind

Yes you could use this to test bamboo shafts. One thing is to make sure that when you are resting the shafts on the tester is to make sure that they are not resting on the nodes so that you get a more accurate reading of the deflection.

I've been using this device to spine out natural river can arrows and have been pleased with the results. There are lots of variation in the shafts I've been using but have been able to produce reasonable consistency and I think the ace tester is a good value. -Rick Spicer

It will measure static spine correctly but keep in mind that bamboo acts different than solid wood so the dynamic spine will shoot differently than a comparable wood spine. It should work well for relative comparisons to match a set of bamboo as long as you understand that a 50# bamboo will act differently than a 50# cedar.

Hi, I have the same spine machine but I've no idea how much it would cost to send to the UK. I ordered two arrow wrappers form a site in Shropshire UK- the cost was around $80.00 (GBP 62.43) if I remember correctly. You should be able to get that price from the post office. It is probably going to be a bit more due to the fact that the spine master is larger and heaver. I had to find the local area/zip for the website (UK has funny numbers like "TF10 0EH" for Shropshire. I called long distance and spoke to the owner to get a shipping quote. Best of luck - hope that assists you some.

Most arrow shafts are 32" long. Wood spines are measured at 26".

Hi Dave, I've only used mine a few times. It seems to be pretty accurate. I just pulled out 3 random 32" D.Fir shafts from Raptor Archery and got the following: this bunch is rated 50-55# (1 at 54#, 1 at 55#, 1 at 56#) I also checked the hunter test kit 32" ( P.O.C.) that I got from 3Rivers and got this: blue set (32") rated 40-45# ( 1 at 42#) Second blue set (29") ( 1 at 38#) 1 shaft cut to 27 3/4" (40.5#) yellow set rated 50-55# (1 at 52# & 1 at 50.5# ) white set rated 45-50# (1 at 47# & 1 at 52#) I also made a 5 set from 3/8" dowels (Madisons/Lowes) at 29" They spine to: 3 at 70#, 1 at 85# & 1 at 90# (125 grain field points -3 parabolic feathers) I shot a tight group ( all 5) in a 3" diameter bulls eye at 30 feet. Hope this helps. (BTW) some of the nocks on the 3Rivers arrows were not in proper alignment so quality control on the spine as stated in the box, might also be off a bit. Dwight

Yes, it will work on any size WOOD shaft. If you want to spine-test carbon or aluminum, you'll have to get a different weight, which they sell. This is a must-have product for anyone making wood arrows.

Hello, I'm a novice arrow builder. Is a spine tester really necessary if I'm buying Cedar shafts that have been factory spined within 5 pounds? I shoot a 50# recurve if that matters. Thanks again

If you are just purchasing shafts by the dozen it will not be as helpful. If you are purchasing shafts in large quantities, a spine tester and a grain scale can help you make more matched sets of arrows.
