Excellent product
Easy to set up. Makes nicely fletched arrows
Almost 35 years of service
my last young burner lasted almost 35 years...it finally gave up the ghost...thousands of feathers burned perfectly...on cedar, fir and aluminum shafts...I have never bought a die cut fletch...and no need to start now..I am so used to the shield pattern I have been making since '77 that I was concerned I could not do that anymore... I was afraid the unit wouldnt be available or… read more maybe the company was gone...you have no idea...thanks three rivers...you pulled through again!
Clean, consistent fletch shaping
This burner works very nicely once you get it adjusted properly. It takes about ten seconds to heat up, and you can tell it's ready when the ribbon glows orange. Once it's hot, just insert your shaft with uncut fletching, spin it one full turn, slip it out, and scrape off the burnt edges with a sharp knife. Shaping the cutting ribbon is a bit of a challenge; I would recommend… read more figuring out your desired ribbon shape, cutting that shape into a sheet of 3/32 hardwood, and bending the ribbon against the shaped hardwood. You can store the cutting ribbons on this board for stability, with some rubber bands holding them in place. The biggest hassle is getting the ribbon aligned correctly, getting it to pass close enough to the fletching to burn down to the lip without scorching the shaft. Lining it up while it's cold is NOT good enough; once the ribbon heats up, the shape will change a bit with expansion, and it will almost certainly pass closer to your shaft than it would cold! After I scorched one shaft due to this, I've kept it around solely to help with testing the position of the ribbon while hot.
Young Feather Burner Delivers
Works as advertised. Enjoyed the experience so much, I 've created a YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PauUgYgWEB0
A must if you fletch a lot of arrows
This is probably my most favourite peice of archery kit. Its very easy to use, and creates custom fletching that no one else has. I use cap wraps, and even when the wire is very close, it still leaves them unharmed. It takes a little expirmentation, as when the wire heats up, it tends to move slightly. I use a nail or screwdriver to fine tune the wire when hot. I advise doing… read more outside or in the garage as that burning feather smell sure will linger. Great product, has been well worth the price.
Great product
Great tool for doing various feather shapes. Perfect feathers every time!
Great product, lousy directions
Long before feather choppers became available, people burned their feathers. If they did it indoors, they're probably dead by now. Noxious fumes, you bet! Do it outside. There is a long learning curve as the directions (and even the 3Rivers video) didn't help much. Bending the wires smoothly is a challenge but once you've got it the way you want it, which is any way your imagination… read more takes you, you can zip them right out. More satisfying than the chopper, but harder to master.
Pretty good, however...
Directions could have been better as to the fine points of operating it. The company suggested keeping the wire 1/16" from the shaft. I backed it 1/8" away and still had scorching on my crest paint. I was forming a parabolic. I did one dozen and thought I was spinning the shafts quick enough. Three Rivers video didn't address this problem. That problem aside, I came out with very… read more nice results, cleaning up the tag ends of feather with sharp scissors and a razor blade. It's certainly fast. Smells like burning hair which may not bother me as much as it bothers others. I will recommend this with an obvious qualification.
Works better than it smells
Burning gives an appearance that can not be created by any other method.
A 100 W
They do not offer those unfortunately.
Hi, I have the young feather burner. Haven't gotten round to using it yet. The paper work that came with it is pretty skimpy. There is no info on the company other than Name, Town, State and zip. No parts listing other than the ribbons. SJM Young Feather Burner, Whitelaw, Wi 54247. If you can find a phone number - you could probably buy the part. Sorry- hope that helps.Dwight
Yes that will accept any size nock
Hi, I haven't had the chance to use my burner yet. You asked a good question. I took mine out of the box and looked at it closely. The black piece where the nock is inserted - is just a plastic cap. There is no cross bar for a nock to fit on. It's like a plastic bottle cap only it comes to a small rounded point. So, based on that , I'd say any size nock should fit, but again I haven't tried mine at this point in time. Hope that helps some. Dwight
In short... Yes.The receiver is just a cone. It doesn't matter if the nock is a 23/64th for woods or a 5/16th carbon. Keep a little pressure applied while spinning the shaft and it will auto center the shaft due to the cone. The only thing that needs to be adjusted for the different shafts is the wire. Takes around 5 seconds once you get used to it.
This is approximately 5 pounds
Hi, I haven't used mine yet. I hope it actually works. I zeroed my postal scale and put the burner on it. It shows just a bit over 4.5 pounds. Hope that helps you. Dwight
It will trim feathers up to 6¼" x 1¼"
A 100 W
Sorry, but we do not have it in 220V
The maximum would be about 6-6.5'' and the minimum is about 2''
Not that I have noticed with mine. They get extremely hot, but I have not had the shape change due to the heat.
These ribbons hold their shape fine, but they do expand slightly when heated. I recommend a test run so you don't burn your shafts.
Hi there. They do not warp much at all when heated. I find that they tend to move slightly away from the arrow when the heat is on. It cools so quickly that I set the wire, and check alignment to the arrow, turn it on, check again carefully without turning arrow, and then if I have to, adjust it with a screwdriver by pressing against the ribbon gently where I want it to move. Hope that helps, R.
The Feather Burner comes with 3 ribbons.

If you have the burner set right so that the ribbon is not touching the shaft and you spin your shaft quickly you should not have a problem. Also when you bend your ribbon remember once it is hot it may expand and burn your shaft so check this before you burn your shafts
